When I first started exploring AI tools in my workflow, it wasn’t because I wanted to cut corners — it was because I needed to keep up.
Like many freelancers supporting agencies, I’m often juggling multiple builds, updates, feedback loops, and tight timelines. The challenge? Delivering work quickly without sacrificing quality or client satisfaction.
Over the past year, I’ve found that using AI strategically (not blindly) helps me do just that — especially when collaborating with fast-moving marketing or design agencies in Cape Town, Joburg, or beyond.
Here’s a transparent look at where AI genuinely helps me – and where I still rely on experience, intuition, and direct agency communication.
How AI-Powered Tools Help My Web Design Workflow
Here are the areas where AI enhances my process without replacing the human element.
1. Wireframes & Layout Concepts
When deadlines are tight or inspiration is low, I sometimes use AI-powered web design tools like Uizard or Figma’s AI suggestions to generate initial layout ideas. These aren’t final designs — just fast ways to visualise structure and test ideas before fine-tuning manually.
Agencies love this because we get on the same page quicker, especially during the pitch or discovery phase.
2. Starter UX Copy & Structure
I’ll occasionally lean on AI (like ChatGPT) to help draft basic button copy, form placeholder text, or structural content outlines — especially if the final copy will be provided later. Of course, I always rewrite for tone, brand, and logic.
3. SEO Planning & Structure
I use tools like NeuronWriter or SurferSEO for SEO-focused builds to inform blog post layouts, page structure, or keyword distribution. This ensures I’m building with search visibility in mind, right from the start.
One client told me, “You built the site as if an SEO guru had already looked at it.” That’s the goal.
4. Code Troubleshooting
Even as someone who writes custom code, AI helps me speed up debugging and small fixes. If I’m troubleshooting a tricky function or refining JavaScript, I’ll use AI to test alternatives before committing changes.
5. Accessibility & Meta Data
AI tools can help auto-generate alt text, suggest heading structures, or even remind me when I’ve skipped important ARIA roles. It’s not perfect — but it improves my first pass and saves time during audits.
What I Don’t Leave to AI (And Never Will)
There are parts of web design and development that no tool can replace. Here’s where I stay hands-on:
- Custom Styling & CSS Logic
I still write and refine all custom styling manually, especially when working with platforms like Divi or custom WordPress website projects. Layout integrity and mobile responsiveness are too nuanced to automate. - Strategic UX Decisions: No AI can anticipate how a client wants to express their brand — especially in niche industries. That’s why I handle wireframes, hierarchy, and journey logic based on the brief, not a generic template.
- Communication & Collaboration: AI doesn’t do scoping, feedback calls, or team sync-ups. That’s where the magic happens — and where agencies feel the difference between a “freelancer” and a reliable white-label partner.
A Real Example: Fast Delivery, Smarter Workflow
Earlier this year, one of my agency partners needed a five-page microsite built in five days — full branding, animations, SEO-friendly, and CMS-editable. I used AI to:
-
Generate rough layout ideas in Uizard (day 1)
-
Build the site in Divi based on those ideas (days 2–3)
-
Draft basic SEO content prompts (for client review)
-
Troubleshoot and refine interactions using code assistants (day 4)
-
Final polish and QA (day 5)
I delivered it with breathing room, and they got the client signed off without revisions.
Final Thoughts: AI as a Co-Pilot, Not a Replacement
If you’re an agency, here’s what I want you to know: I’m not using AI to replace creativity, strategy, or design. I’m using it to support faster, better outcomes — so I can be a more reliable partner for your team.
Whether you’re scaling up, catching up, or handling overflow, I’m ready to slot in.
